Sounds to me like you are interested in collecting non-metric data from your 
devices and storing that in the "inventory DB".  I think you should be 
investigating the SNMP Asset Adapter.  This is a provisioning adapter that 
queries OIDs and allows you to store the values in the Node Assets table.
