willing hands made fast the stays to windward and others spread the
spare sail from the upper end of the spar. As the last rope was bent, a
strong draught of air came over the water. The canvas shook, then
filled, and as the fresh breeze steadied in her sails the sloop heeled
far to port. She moved faster and faster, while the white water surged
