Hmm... I do not know, but I though that I tried some times ago and that debugging symbols were missing on default build. They are probably there by default now, as you and Spen are confirming this. I thought that there is some ./configure switch to choose between release/debugging mode, but it seems that CFLAGS change seems to be the solution.
