Hi Paul, I checked almost one year ago. Not sure situation is exactly same, but I don't expect dramatic changes. While DFU state machine is well defined, protocol extensions and other details can make specific implementations incompatible. There is a u-boot extension (probably already upstream) of DFU aimed for target device. It works well with dfu-util. But dfu-util does not work with either the firmware in Atmel AVR or in ST STM32. The project dfu-programmer is specific for Atmel firmware. One year ago I was asked to provide a Linux tool for STM32 (ST provides only Windows program), and I found dfu-programmer easier to extend to ST specific protocol than dfu-util.
