It appeared to be a misconfiguration on my part, the default package set is correct. I'd also recommend to add mass storage, ACM and ftdi_sio support when self-compiling an image to be able to access aux UART on STLink v2.1 and FTDI-based adapters. In addition to it, OpenWrt provides means to use gdb to debug your apps on the target device, so selecting gdbserver is also recommended. Please take into account that when you select packages during the build, you are able to pack them way more tightly (as squashfs is a storage-efficient read-only filesystem, compared to jffs2 overlay used for read/write data).
