It is harmful to OpenOCD developers and by extension the whole community. But I'm sure it's still considered a feature by some. It is easy to imagine someone who has scripts set up for an older version of OpenOCD where ft2232 was still a good choice. They need to update their scripts to use the ftdi driver instead, because ft2232 is no longer being maintained.
