I've been looking at the possibility to write a target for STM8 cpu's. How ever I've noticed two issues with the stlink driver:
1) The stlink usb swim protocol is completely broken. 2) stlink usb driver assumes it is connected to a JTAG/SWD connected arm processor. Specifically it try to read from some 32-bit address for the cpu id. So, I've been patching around with the stlink_usb.c driver and it does work on both SWIM for STM8 and SWD for STM32 now.
