Thank you so much for your research!
Do you recommend to use the "tool-openocd-gd32v" from platformio? Or should I 
somehow pull this particular riscv commit and build OpenOCD from sources 
(although I'd need a little help to pull this through)?

I did some searching for you, the code in question is in

https://github.com/diodep/riscv-openocd/commits/riscv

And still not accepted by riscv openocd maintainers due to quality
issues: https://github.com/riscv/riscv-openocd/pull/399
