I tried to apply the patch, but it didn't apply cleanly.

In this mailing list there is a consensus to attach svn diff's as text
attachments
for patches. Perhaps someone else will look at your non-svn patch(the consensus
at this point), but your chances of getting patches applied will increase
dramatically if you post something that this mailing list is used to accepting.

You can post a separate message if you want to pitch quilt(a great
tool I'm sure,
I've heard it mentioned many times).

Personally I look into new tools when there is a specific need. There are so
many wonderful open source tools out there that triage just has to be
that brutal.
