For some reason, patches make me feel compelled... and it's hardly like
I'm the only one, or that I do it all the time.  :)

Yeah.  Another reason to push for properly libraries: we could prohibit
such oddities from entering the tree.  That support should _always_ have
been written as a separate application.  Right now, the code has a
serious case of multiple personality disorder.
