This suggests to me that successful autoconfiguration
of interfaces will need a special case.

I'd suggest something simple ... like never suggesting
the "lm3s811" ... but if its USB IDs show up, display a
message saying that iff the board in question is an old
(before Rev C??) '811 eval board, the user should use
that config file instead.
