I mean that it is really pretty easy to make a new PCB with a new MCU
when something compelling becomes available. If that is even needed..

Over the last few years it has become very common to find MCU
development boards which cost less than many if not most existing
JTAG products, and can do the job just as well if not better.

Of course a €13 Cortex-M3 board can not compete with the FPGA in a
ZY1000, but since about half a year the Open Logic Sniffer board with
a crappy USB PIC and a small Spartan-3E has been available including
worldwide shipping for $45. It could certainly be used to do pretty
snappy JTAG.
