We are now testing Gerrit for use within OpenOCD.
Just a comment from a lurker. Is there any intent to integrate gerrit
back into the ML? See [1] for an existing gripe.
The main difference I see between gerrit and a mailinglist is, for most
users, a mailinglist is passive and consolidated. A web interface
requires a lot more interaction just to keep up.
If I am out for several days, my openocd imap folder has everything that
happened. I browse the subjects, read the threads of interest, and move
on. In the gerrit lurkflow, there's quite a bit more clicking (how long
ago was it I last checked the pending patch list?) to get the same
information. I also have to remember to visit the site.
The only reason I mention it is because I believe the mailinglist is a
much lower barrier for entry to newcomers (as opposed to initial
visitors). This assumes that newbies hangout for a while before
commenting / contributing. Once they subscribe to the ml, it shows up
in their inbox everyday. Whereas with gerrit, they have to actively
seek it out every day or couple of days. A new user has to work
significantly harder to maintain a prolonged interest in the project
with gerrit (imnsho).
On a personal note, I've found it much easier to contribute to u-boot
and the kernel vice cyanogenmod. The main reason for this is the lack
of a mailinglist for CM (they use gerrit). Maybe I'm odd and a one-off,
but I thought it was worth mentioning as I use openocd everyday and I've
learned quite a bit from the mailinglist. I'd hate to see that stream
of patches and comments dissappear. :-(
thanks for the effort and for listening,
Jason.
