I tried to reproduce this. With openpkg-1.2.0-1.2.0 and gcc-3.2.1-1.2.0
lftp-2.6.4-1.2.0 did not even build, upgrading to gcc-3.3-20030603 did
not help. However, using lftp-2.6.6-20030529 worked. I didn't try to go
back to gcc-3.2.1 to see if that helps. I have the impression that
using gcc-3.3 on SuSE is the better try as SuSE 8.2 itself was built and
comes with gcc-3.3 and apropriate includes.

Here's my setup. BTW, i did a simple run-time test, too.

# uname -a
Linux dv14 2.4.20-4GB #1 Mon Mar 17 17:54:44 UTC 2003 i686 unknown unknown GNU/Linux

# cat /etc/SuSE-release
SuSE Linux 8.2 (i586)
VERSION = 8.2

# /cw/bin/rpm -q openpkg make binutils gcc lftp #CURRENT
make-3.80-20030109
openpkg-20030604-20030604
binutils-2.13.2.1-20030321
gcc-3.3-20030603
lftp-2.6.6-20030529

# /usr/opkg/bin/rpm -q openpkg make binutils gcc lftp #RELEASE_1_2
openpkg-1.2.0-1.2.0
make-3.80-1.2.0
binutils-2.13.2.1-1.2.0
gcc-3.3-20030603
lftp-2.6.6-20030529
