The official way to determine the release is the newer "openpkg release"
command. Run "openpkg man release" for more details.

Well, "openpkg release --fmt=%t" should do what you want.

That's not the case with "openpkg release". It reads the optional
<prefix>/etc/openpkg/release config file and its TAG variable and this
way knowns about 2-STABLE snapshots, too.
