See e.g libiberty
http://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/libiberty/Memory-Allocation.html#Memory-Allocation
 and xmalloc at
http://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/libiberty/Functions.html#Functions

This ticket is about adding something like xmalloc and friends to leap to make
it accessible from other services.

Using a function like xmalloc, error handling when allocating dynamic memory is
not needed. Many lines of code can be removed yet keeping at consistent error
handling.
