Please explain how you could get access, if you are not executing as a member
of the posix group(s)
that have access, but did somehow snoop out a handle value.

exactly!
But if such user can find an existing privileged handle, I claim that you can
get access. You probably need a specially crafted program not using the
standard IMM library but the hole is there afaik.
