Just a note: the UML environment has not "fallen into despair". :-) The reason why it is not included in the release tarballs is that it is mainly intended to be used by developers. We don't want to invest time in maintaining support for too many versions of various Linux distributions. Most developers use a recent version of Ubuntu anyhow, so it would be a wast of time to make it work on other / older distributions. Personally I test it on Fedora as well, so usually it will work with that distribution as well.
