Just found out NIST has releases an update on the PIV cards yesterday. http://csrc.nist.gov/publications/drafts.html#sp800-73-1 I have not read it, but it might remove the restriction on the cert objects being private, which is what the mode to the pkcs11-framework.c is all about.
