With pinpads you start to think differently what a pin is or is not. It's just impossible to 'store' it then.

times. I would like to have that too! but it is not a solution
for everyone, for example for eid cards with lawful "qualified"
signature keys it is not allowed to have that in some countries.
The card itself requires and asks for a new pin if needed...
btw, the "qualified" comes from EU directives if I'm not mistaken..

still even with different preferences, it would be great to put this into a web page as reference for everyone who has plans for adding smart card support to his applications. knowing all the issues involved should make it easier to pick the right design if you know about these advanced
topics.

I think it starts from the stage when a software can support RSA crypto these days. And that this suport is built against the right framework (not just openssl) if there exists one for the platform (CDSA for mac for example).
