take a look at gnupg. as far as I know the whole architecture is different. as far as I know: with openpgp card the card has up to three
rsa keys, but no meta data like certificates etc. at all. instead in
they keyring on hard disk, there is a flag "the secret key for this
is on smart card" so it knows.

not sure, but I guess the scute pkcs#11 module will make the whole
gnupg key store available to some application, but this is only
speculation.

still I haven't found time to look at it in depth so far :(
