I'm definitely a newbie on the smart card side, but if there was already an effort in progress I could help out with that would be great. I could probably also part with a card or two if one of the more experienced OpenSC developers was interested at looking at them.
I'd be willing to help as time permits, and I'm sure many other people here can answer questions about writing new card drivers too. So why don't you give it a try? take a look at a few drivers with full support (like cardos and cryptoflex and starcos), the basic pattern is pretty much the same. I hope that helps to get started?
