Rather frustratingly, reverting the file I changed and rebuilding from
scratch is now not showing up the original problem. I guess I must have
had some kind of transient breakage in the way my build environment was
set up.
How embarrassing.
Sorry to have bothered everyone with a false alarm. Douglas Engert has
sent me some clues to help me debug it properly if the problem returns.
