in that case: can you try with defines instead of variables? that way you shouldn't need extra files, only two definitions in Makefile.am for the two results and a _CFLAGS line with -DFIREFOX_HACK and some #ifdef in the code. not sure if it works, but those two mini files don't look that nice ...
