You are right. Think is much like a Debian like distro, but packages lack behind. MacPorts compiles ports, which can take a heck of time, but packages are usually up-to-date. Just for info, there is also Darwin Ports: http://www.darwinports.com/ DarwinPorts seems pretty up-to-date and seems to provide binaries. I will be testing DarwinPorts and will reports. Too bad that Apple does not release Darwin any longer.
