To my knowledge, ideas are not copyrighted. 

In Europe, studying a code for reverse engineering is allowed, if this
is for interoperability, which seems to be the case. From a legal point
of view, you should be able to access the information of your own ID
using GNU/Linux i.e. OpenSC.

What is not allowed is copying a block of code, even a few lines, or
creating classes or code structures, which have exactly the same
components, but different names.
