Did you use the card in another reader? Any difference there? If the card contacts are worn you can try to clean them or otherwise fix them up. Be careful to not use anything abrasive, since the contacts should all be gold plated and ideally flat. Abrasion might go through the thin plating and expose the contacts to corrosion, and an abraded contact will also abrade the reader contact that it scrapes against. Use only soft stuff. Since the reader contacts are inside the reader they are more difficult to get at, but you could try to experiment with stuffing a sheet of thick felt (Filz) into the reader, possibly with some alcohol on it, somehow like the pipe cleaner or Q-tip principle, except flat.
