I would guess the problem comes indeed from mixing two OpenSSL versions. As OpenSC itself (or the engine) it not a validated product, I don't really see what would it add to the picture. If you need to be validated, you probably can't use OpenSC (or the engine) and if not, why not choose the standard OpenSSL?
