Information on fontconfig is available here:
http://nexp.cs.pdx.edu/fontconfig/

All TrueType and Type1 fonts managed by fontconfig should be 
available to OpenSG once our stuff is integrated.

UTF8 should work fine. I already played around with 
chinese characters ;)
