Hi,
Above that, which one is most suitable for stereo projection? In our
case, we'd like to select some objects in space and display additional
information about it on the screen. So how to keep the text (up to
approx. 1k characters, read from database) still readable?
1k characters is quite a lot. For this it probably doesn't make sense to
locate it close to the object(s) in question. For that I'd recommend
using something close to the statistics method, but using a different
font. The texture text scales pretty well, so readability for small
characters should be ok.
Ah okay, we'll have a closer look into that again. Is there already some
test program or code snippet showing how to use (selfmade?) texture
texts with statistics? Or is that already in the according statistics demos?
But, honestly, if you have that kind of text output on top of a 3D
scene, I'd think about using a tablet PC or some other display to show
it. Pretty much no matter what you do, it's going to be hard to read
this much text on top of a complex 3D scene.
Well, I should have said why we need that much text. The application is
an "astronomical viewer" or "3D star map" in outer space showing all
stars within 20 lightyears' range from earth, giving approx. 80 stars or
double/triple-systems. Aside from the viewing, zooming, and "beaming"
functionality (i.e., jumping close to the desired star), we want to pick
a star to get information like name, position, size, and details about
it's "life". This totals for some stars in a bunch of characters...
I agree that some external device (or even some terminal thingy) would
be fine for that much information. However, this would be too much for a
students' thesis (Studienarbeit) in that case, so some "on screen"
alternative is the only option for now...
Thanks for your comments,
Matthias
p.s.: Maybe we should think about the perspectively vanishing text from
the Star Wars intro. But maybe the allusion would be just too obvious...;)
