I did that, now I get a different error message (as if glut were not
installed):
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lOSGWindowGLUT

This is not related to GLUT not being installed (compiling and especially linking of OpenSG itself should have failed then), the linker just cannot find the library. Try adding the correct folder to LD_LIBRARY_PATH.
using bash, for example:
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib/dbg:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
