Hm. I don't like to depend on that very much, unless there s an easy way
to actually make it work in VS reliably (i.e. no absolute paths etc.).
The whole point of adding them to the repository has to allow VS builds
out of the box, and I wouldn't want to give that up.

I second that. I would like to move everything that's not ours out into
external, to keep our repository smaller.
