I'm not quite sure if I understand your question correctly, but newer
gcc have builtins that let you access the various processors
instructions to write SIMD code (see
<http://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc-4.2.1/gcc/X86-Built_002din-
Functions.html#X86-Built_002din-Functions>)
Also there is a vector extension that offers a bit of portability (see
<http://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc-4.2.1/gcc/Vector-
Extensions.html#Vector-Extensions>).
I've never used these extensions myself though, so I can not give you
any more info on them.
