have you tried different values for the argument you pass to forward? 
How do these values relate to the size of your scene, i.e. in a large 
scene the values should also be larger or you will be moving very slowly ;)
Another thought: does your framerate drop, when you are close to the 
scene?  The collision detection is not very sophisticated (i.e. it does 
not make use of special datastructures to speed it up). Having a complex 
scene or even just a complex object in it may cause the intersection 
test that is used for finding collisions become very slow. Might that be 
the problem?
If yes, you could try building a lower resolution version of your scene 
and set that as ground/world for the WalkNavigator respectively.
