argh, yes it is correctly complaining that I use explicit instantiation
and explicit specialization of a template which is not allowed (I wonder
why gcc was silent about this?). I think I know now how to fix it. Many
thanks for giving it a try.

yes, sorry for making it look like I was offloading testing my whacky
code to you. The problem was that my workstation had died on me and I
needed to reinstall windows and all the build tools (our linux luckily
PXE boots over the net so there is little setup required), so I could
not test the patch myself last week. Meanwhile I've got it all running
again and will see about fixing that problem later today. Thanks again
for helping out with the testing ;)
