hmm, this was for the input side only, the output side face a similar
problem only that the rewriting is in the opposite way. Looking around
a little it seems other libs just implemented there own string
conversion (e.g. gnome lib). 
I still have to check if the boost lexical casts are of any help.
Similar I have to check Marcus comment about the local locale inside
the streams. But that most likely only helps for ascii output as the
input path sits behind a flex scanner.
