no, it does not have an index (which is perhaps not the most common 
csae), but otherwise this looks fairly ordinary to me.

hm, I have trouble reproducing this with the testClusterServer/Client 
programs. Just to be sure, I should be seeing a box that looks like a 
package (with address stamp and some duct tape) ? The scene graph seems 
to suggest there is more than one piece of geometry in the file, does 
the box consist of more than one osg::Geometry? Should I be seeing 
something else?
What happens if you use testClusterServer/Client programs? If those 
should work for you, perhaps comparing them with your code can reveal 
some differences?
