hmm, given that I'm not too familiar with MSVC, I'm wondering: what is 
the downside to doing this, i.e. is it not useful to be able to have 
(some) debug info even for optimized builds?

Pure speculation here: it's possible nobody tried and it is simply 
unknown if this works reliably.
Also, I was always under the impression whole program optimization (or 
link time optimization) is most powerful when building executables and 
less so for libraries - no numbers to back this up, I may just be 
perpetuating a myth here ;)
