This bug was reported in 11.04. Re-testing in 11.10 shows the same result (no bookmarks).

Also, the (gvfs-) connected servers are also not shown on the left in this dialog. This problems happens with a lot of applications, so maybe it's better to solve this in the GNOME-framework, by showing the Places entries by default.
