Found the problem. ATI driver fglrx (Version 11.8 ?) that installs when restricted drivers are enabled causes openshot to crash.
Downloaded the latest driver from ati for 64bit version 11.11. After installing the new ati driver and rebooting Openshot no longer crashes. ** Description changed: Openshot when opened causes account to be logged out and goes back to login screen.
