Couldn't this just be a part of the webfrontend that's being used? There are currently php and python implementations of the maptile generator, which can be used with wi-redux, hwios or another web-ui. Maybe it would be nice to have an api call to get a list of current active regions, so the maptiler doesnt necessarily need db-access?
