i finally found out the issue. netgaer dg834 v1 and v2 firmware is bugged.
badly. upgrading to v3 fixed the static routes and i now have loopback
setup.
took a bit to find out that fully qualified domain names are not returned
to the viewer when handshaking - as far as i understand it. so pretty much
have to use a router with loopback (that isnt broken!).
