As for bouncing down hills when landing, it might be solved once the ODE
(Open Dynamics Engline) is complete or someone adding code to OpenSim
works it out. But it seems that is normal behavjikf in Secondlife too.
Hopeing that because it is like that in SL, that don't become the norm
in OpenSim.
I have an idea as far as sitting on unscripted objects go. I haven't
tried it myself, and I am right in the middle of something else at the
moment. I have used the avataranimations.xml file found in the bin/data
folder to chnage my walks and fly animations. It is sort of like making
an Defalt AO. Replace the standard sit animations with one that sits
you lower, and closer to where you would want to sit on objects. That
might actually do it. Just remember, it will use it for everyone.
Others who have found good ways to make wearable AOs, their Aos will
still work as long as you don't replace the animations used in
avataranimations.xml with high priority ones.
Good luck to you all.

I've noticed this issue as well, as it applies to objects without a
script in them at all. Sometimes you want to sit on a prim without a
script, and not levitate a few feet above it. Especially during
building& checking the scale of objects. I've wondered too if there
is a way to fix this in an .ini or other file? I suppose similar to
the problem discussed in an earlier thread about the issue of avatars
hovering a few inches above whatever they're standing/walking on?
The bouncing avatar I've noticed is worse when landing on sloped
terrain (and also seems to want to follow the slope of the terrain
downwards, instead of actually landing when using the keyboard to
land). I usually just quickly toggle the stop flying/fly/stop flying
button after the attempted landing to fix this.
