This might sound odd but it was recommended to me by a person on a grid I was visiting to unpack all boxes on the grid they were made in and then to attach complex items to my avatar and then detach them when I got back to the other grid. Seems his experience was things travelled better attached to the avatar than in the inventory. I don't know how well it works as I have only ever tried the unpacking boxes before I head home part and then only once or twice. I can't explain why this may work technically but it might help.
