I am guessing the same grid but two separate instances.

Sorry Shaun, I'm still learning the terminology, so I could be mixing
grids, regions and scenes up.
I logged in to a server running on my PC with one test account with Hippo.
I logged in again with any other viewer on same PC - Hippo logs out
automatically.
Is this by design because it was the same region?
What you are saying is that if I set two regions up on the same grid,
I could login to both once each?
My reading of Justin's link to
http://opensimulator.org/mantis/view.php?id=5969 is that it is
possible, but rather than sharing an avatar, two instances are
created. Although this doesn't help my use case, I wonder is there a
config setting to allow this or am I missing something obvious?
Thanks for the reply.

That is incorrect. You can and it is by design. You cannot be in
the same region as yourself however and that includes child agents
of either instance of you. I frequently am logged into my grid
twice, just in different parts of it where there is no overlap
between either instance of myself.

empirically, I'd say "no", you can't be logged in simultaneously
using two different viewers.

There likely is. I'm thinking using remote admin to access

That might be do-able through scripts running inworld. But I
am only beginning my own explorations on those myself, for
use in RP, so those may be blind alleys.

Thanks for taking the time to reply Sarge Misfit, I agree, I don't
think it is viewer related, so that's why I enquired on the server list rather
than the (many!) different viewer lists.

present morethan once.
That is the current normal operation, and it's not a bad design.
As this is a new area to me, and I'm still learning the APIs and
terminology, I want to avoid building software that is unnecessary simply
because an obvious solution to an expert was imperceptible to me.
I guess I'm asking the following:Is there an established mechanism
or best practice for issuing commands (such as LL Script commands) to run on a
particular avatar (assuming you own the login details etc.) without issuing
them through a logged in viewer?
