for startups and SMEs (less than 250 employees) http://realxtend.org/2014/09/16/realxtend-in-eu-future-internet-initiative-80-million-funding-for-application-dev/ http://realxtend.org/2014/09/20/7-training-events-around-europe-in-fiware-startup-weekends/
the technologies under the FI umbrella include also many HTTP / REST backends etc. so using e.g. the geographical Point Of Interest (POI) server, or the Context Broker or whatever that the other chapters (not realXtend) have there, is normal, easy & straightforward from Opensimulator too if you prefer. it's a requirement for the funding to use some FI tech. so what I mean is that you can easily use many of them e.g. with http from Opensimulator. even perhaps their object store for assets, dunno. what we provide there is the Tundra server & WebTundra webgl+websockets client, plus some other related things (like those POI and GIS, and AR etc.). we'll be happy to try clarify if there are questions about the funding etc!
