You're right - there is a shared library issue in the 1.2.1 code base.
We were building shared libraries from a static convenience library
(libcommon) that was NOT being built with Position Independent Code
(PIC). We've fixed this in the 2.0 code base, but need to retrofit the
fix back into the 1.x line.

You're welcome to take a look at the SVN trunk (Makefile.am) files to
see what we did - it's really pretty straight-foreward, if you're
familiar at all with Autotools.
