I have incorporated Varun Chandramohan's patch in full from bug report
2983069 as revision 1631

I have incorporated the conditional compilation part of Matt Pendlebury's
patch (to control the change to run as "daemon") from bug report #3026763 as
revision 1632. The remainder of the patch was mostly based on Anthony
Tong's patch. I have not taken the change to make IPv6 operation enabled by
default, for backwards compatibility reasons, and to avoid the possible
unexpected creation of IPv6 multicast sockets for static services.
