Hi Tim,

I imagine it's going to be up to the individual containers to a larger
degree than OpenSocial as a whole.  There's really no defined rules on
this, but it's all extremely bleeding edge and many parts of the API
(and presumably the TOS) haven't been released yet.

That said, it's certainly an awesome way for Google to encourage
people using Adsense.  I think monetizing third-party apps is going to
be crucial for the intense proliferation of OpenSocial, be it through
things like Adsense, sponsored content, or creative ways to encourage
affiliate purchases.

A great example of a current OpenSocial app being profitable just by
providing another outlet to a preexisting service is PayPal.  I
imagine many commercial apps will exist to drive traffic to an outside
website, where the app takes on the functionality of a lead-generating
interactive advertisement.  Many of the same concepts in monetizing
RSS feeds are applicable -- albeit in a much more rich and dynamic
way.
