The problem with that is the way Orkut creates thumbnails. Instead of shrinking the image to a proportionate thumbnail, they are trying to create a fix size with the center as image's center. This is what Flickr does for one of its sizes also. This can be embarrassing in some situations, as you pointed out. There is no way a developer can fix this.
